The complete 7-day Kerala itinerary

A week-long route through hills, spice country, backwaters and beaches — the fullest classic trip.

Local canoe on an Alleppey backwater village canal — Kerala holiday package

Seven days is, for many travellers, the ideal length for Kerala. It covers everything the popular 5-day route does, but with room to breathe — an extra day in the hills, a proper beach finish, and a pace that lets you actually relax rather than tick boxes. Here's the complete week, day by day.

The route

Cochin → Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey → Kovalam → departure. It threads together all four of Kerala's signature landscapes and ends on the beach. It closely follows our Classic Grand Circuit package.

Day 1 — Arrive in Kochi

Land in Cochin and explore Fort Kochi — the Chinese fishing nets, Jew Town, and an evening Kathakali show. Overnight in Kochi.

Day 2 — Kochi to Munnar

Scenic drive into the Munnar tea hills with waterfall stops. Afternoon among the plantations. Overnight in Munnar.

Day 3 — Munnar

A full day for Munnar's highlights — Eravikulam National Park, the Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and a viewpoint. This extra day (versus the 5-day route) is what makes the week feel unhurried. Overnight in Munnar.

Day 4 — Munnar to Thekkady

Drive to Thekkady. Afternoon spice-plantation walk and an evening cultural performance. Overnight in Thekkady.

Day 5 — Thekkady to Alleppey houseboat

Morning Periyar Lake boat safari, then down to Alleppey to board your private houseboat. Cruise the backwaters, meals on deck, sunset over the paddy. Overnight aboard.

Day 6 — Alleppey to Kovalam

Disembark after breakfast and transfer south to the beach at Kovalam. Afternoon by the sea, sunset on Lighthouse Beach. Overnight in Kovalam.

Day 7 — Kovalam to departure

A final relaxed morning on the beach (or an optional Varkala cliff day trip) before transferring to Trivandrum airport. A complete week, every landscape covered.

Route variations for 7 days

  • Add the north: swap the beach for Wayanad if you prefer forests to sand.
  • Backwater-heavy: extra nights split between Alleppey and Kumarakom.
  • Wellness week: replace two days with an Ayurveda stay — see our Ayurveda retreat.
  • Romance: build it around private pool villas and a Kumarakom houseboat.

How much driving?

The week is well-paced — the longest drive is Cochin to Munnar (3-4 hours), the rest 2-4 hour hops. The extra day in Munnar means no back-to-back long-driving days, which is exactly why seven days feels so much more comfortable than five.

What it costs and how to book

A 7-day trip with private car, mid-range to boutique hotels and an overnight houseboat sits in the mid-range per person, more in peak season (Dec-Jan) or at luxury tier. Our Kerala tour packages bundle it all so there are no surprises — send your dates for a tailored quote, and see our seasonal guide to choose when to travel.

Final word

If you can spare a week, take it. The seventh day on a beach, the unhurried second day in the hills, the slow houseboat afternoon — these are what turn a good Kerala trip into a great one. We'll tailor the whole circuit to your pace and budget.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for Kerala?

Seven days is ideal — it covers the full classic circuit of hills, spice country, backwaters and a beach, at a comfortable, unhurried pace.

What is the best 7-day Kerala route?

Cochin → Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey → Kovalam → departure, covering all four signature landscapes and finishing on the beach.

Is a 7-day Kerala trip better than 5 days?

If you can spare the time, yes — the extra two days add a relaxed beach finish and a second day in the hills, removing the rush of the 5-day version.
